My team and I are busy under way gathering and analyzing metrics for the upcoming Q1 release of our popular email marketing benchmark report (stay tuned for the release date in March!) All this data is too good to keep to myself so I thought I’d share a sneak peek.
I always hear my fellow email marketers looking for metrics related to email timing, as we all try to master that formula for email marketing success:
Right Person + Right Message + Right Time = Relevancy (and usually conversions too!)
So, what a better stat to share then the results we have found for day of the week!

As we have seen in past years, the results are pretty consistent throughout the week, however, Wednesday is a winner in both opens and clicks coming in at an average open of 32% and 25% click rate. This year, we also reviewed weekend results for the first time and were impressed to see both Saturday and Sunday received strong opens, however click-thru rates were slightly lower than the weekdays.
Now for the disclaimer; it is important to use this data with your own metrics and testing program. This data should only be used as a guide and keep in mind that every audience is different. The full report is coming soon, so look for it in your inbox this March!

Wouldn’t the number of emails sent have to be consistent to have a true reflection of which day of the week performs the best?
I would assume most organizations do not send as much email on the weekends as they do on a weekday, so you may be comparing stats of 100 emails sent on Saturday to 1,000 emails sent on Wednesday. Or do you account for volume?
Great comment! Your are right that volume does come into play and while volume is pretty consistent on the weekdays, it does dip down on the weekend. For that reason, in the past releases we have not included weekend results. However, we always get a lot of request for data on email sent on the weekend and that is why we included it this year. I will be sure to include the disclaimer about volume in the official release in March. Thanks for pointing it out!
